"What does it mean to work in an Augustinian University?"
By Dana Imperia '05

On Nov. 11 and 29, the Office of Planning, The Rev. Kail Ellis, O.S.A., dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, discusses what it means to him to work in an Augustinian University.Training and Institutional Research held a two-part series seminar for faculty at the Radnor/St. David Room in the Connelly Center, examining “What does it mean to work in an Augustinian University?” The seminar was presented by Dr. Barbara Wall, special assistant to the president for Mission Effectiveness; the Rev. Kail Ellis, O.S.A., dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences; and Noreen Cameron, associate director of Campus Ministry.

After introductions from Wall, Father Ellis discussed the vision of the early Augustinians and how that vision has evolved over the years. “The University has a commitment to ethical values, social justice and a moral vision for the world,” he said. Emphasizing Augustine’s desire for truth, Father Ellis addressed the importance of maintaining a friendly atmosphere and respectful community of scholars on campus.

Cameron recalled the many experiences with Villanova students who volunteer for service activities through Campus Ministry. Referring to the University mission statement, she noted that the University has a deep foundation in Christianity: “We are a community of faith and we offer mutual respect for others. Our rich tradition of service is rooted in our Faith,” Cameron said. With one of the largest service break volunteer programs and post-graduate volunteer work in the country, the University’s dedication to helping others was one of the most valuable aspects that Cameron applauded.

Concluding the seminar, Wall commented on the goals of the University to stimulate and challenge its student body. “Today, with such an affluent student body, we need to challenge our students to become members of the community and to promote good,” Wall said. The seminar concluded with questions and further discussion among the faculty.
