NOTEWORTHY Gary R. Olsen, assistant vice president for alumni affairs, recently made a presentation titled "Strengthening Alumni Relations in the 21st Century" to a group of 27 university presidents from throughout China. The program was held at the University of Pennsylvania as a part of Penn's higher education leadership program with the National Academy of Education Administration (NAEA). NAEA is the only higher education leadership academy funded by the Ministry of Education of China. James Kirschke, English Department, has had an article, " 'The Wrong Guy ... on Trial?': THE CAINE MUTINY: Novel, Film, and Historical Reality," accepted for publication on the film link of Magazine Americana, The Institute for the Study of American Popular Culture. The article should be available before the New Year. Help was received from Villanova draduate and former NROTC program staff member Commander Bob Hyde, U.S.N. and a former grad assistant, Vic Sensenig. Kevin O'Donnell, superintendent of grounds, was recently honored as the recipient of the Professional Grounds Management Society's (PGMS) inaugural E. Earl Wilson Award during ceremonies at the Society's 2004 School of Professional Grounds Management & Green Industry Expo (GIE) in Charlotte, N.C. (Nov. 3-6). Created this year, this new award is a tribute to E. Earl Wilson, a past president of PGMS. Considered the Society's highest honor, it is presented as deemed appropriate for outstanding and sustained service and dedication to PGMS and the Green Industry as a whole. Richard Laudenslager, facilities management - recycling, recently earned his Recycling Professional certification. This distinction is earned by attending 20 professional seminar classes offered by Penn State University and PA Department of Environmental Protection and then passing a certification test. Stephen Kern, facilities services - grounds, has earned the professional designation as a certified arborist. This professional certification is administered by the International Society of Arboriculture to individuals that have demonstrated a high level of Professional Tree knowledge and complete a practical exam. |
