Tree
Lighting

Th e
weather outside wasn’t exactly frightful on Dec 1,
but
it was windy enough to prompt administrators to move Villanova’s annual tree
lighting ceremony inside the Connelly Center. There, students, faculty and
staff sang Christmas carols, munched chocolate chip cookies and were
reminded of the real reason we celebrate this important Christian holiday.
University president, the Rev. Edmund J. Dobbin, O.S.A. suggested that as we
gaze at the beautiful manger scenes in our churches and on campus, we
reflect on the Gospels and the
Evangelists
moving description of Christ’s birth. “Birthdays were not important in those
days,” Father Dobbin explained. “No one knows exactly what month and day
Jesus was born.” Late December was selected many centuries later,
he continued because in many cultures, a celebration of light coming out of
darkness was already in
place
for that time of year. For Christians, Jesus was and is the Light who leads
us out of the darkness.
