Master's candidate wins 2005 Gates Cambridge Scholarship
By Maureen McKew

In October 2005 the fifth annual contingent of new Gates Scholars, selected from countries around the world, will begin their graduate studies at the University of Cambridge, England.  The 38 successful candidates from the U.S. who have been offered Gates Cambridge Scholarships include Daniel DiCenso, from Philadelphia, a master’s candidate in Villanova’s classical studies department, who will study for a doctorate in music at Cambridge. He is the second Villanovan to win this award since the start of the scholarship program in 2001. He anticipates receiving his master’s degree from the University this summer. In addition to studying for his degree, DiCenso teaches English and Latin at Lenape Regional High School District, Shamong, N.J.

After completing an undergraduate degree in music from the College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, Mass., DiCenso earned two master’s degrees from the University of Pennsylvania: the first in education (2001) and the second in music (2002).

At Cambridge, he plans to study for a doctorate in music, continuing his exploration of chant, focusing on the Carolingian era, when efforts to impart a sense of imperial unity impacted indigenous local cultural practices such as chant.

In October 2000, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation of Seattle, Washington, USA announced a donation to the University of Cambridge of $210 million to establish the Gates Cambridge Trust.  According to the foundation, this benefaction creates in perpetuity an international scholarship program to enable outstanding graduate students from outside the United Kingdom to study at the University of Cambridge. The trustees are required to award scholarships on the basis of a person's intellectual ability, leadership capacity and desire to use their knowledge to contribute to society throughout the world by providing service to their communities and applying their talents and knowledge to improve the lives of others.
