Physics Honor Society welcomes new class
Kevin Maher ’04

The physics department held its 22nd Sigma Pi Sigma, the Physics Honor Society, Induction Ceremony on March 21 in Mendel Science Center, welcoming 12 new members with majors in physics and astronomy to its brotherhood.

Looking beyond solely academic accomplishments, the mission of Sigma Pi Sigma, brought to the university in 1978, is rooted in the four qualities honor, encouragement, service and fellowship. In recognizing demonstrated scholarship, the standards for election to Sigma Pi Sigma are high, acting as inspiration for all physics students to strive for excellence. With such a high level of achievement comes a responsibility to serve, whether nationally working for sound science policies or locally working with the community and individual students. As the program for the event boasted, through the diverse members of the fellowship, “physics has enriched the world beyond the scope of the physics community.”

The ceremony was hosted by senior members, Lisa Winter and Jeffrey Tracey, both astronomy majors from the class of ’03, who provided a brief history of the honor society as well as an explanation of its symbols and motto “Investigation, the Forerunner of Knowledge.”

Following the induction, Dr. Norbert Mulders, of the University of Delaware, was on hand to speak on “The Acoustics of Superfluid Helium.”
