Andrea Flood ‘03
Mr. Charles S. Palazzolo Sr., 70, professor
of sociology and long time presence at the University, died on March 21.
Palazzolo joined the faculty of the Villanova sociology department in
1958 and spent a remarkable 33 years with the University, finally retiring
in 1991. He received his bachelor of science degree in sociology from
Loyola University of New Orleans and his masters degree from Louisiana
State University. He also pursued further graduate study at the University
of Pennsylvania.
At the University his special area of study was the sociology of small
groups, a subject upon which he wrote a book, titled, Small Groups: An
Introduction. He also taught introductory sociology courses as well as
courses on the sociology of adolescents.
“Charlie was really a fixture in the department and University,
he was very much loved by the people who knew him…he was a man who
lived here; he could not spend enough time of campus. It was truly a second
home to him,” said Dr. Richard Juliani of the sociology department.
Palazzolo was a resident of Philadelphia. He is survived by his former
wife Florence Palazzolo; daughter, Florence Ott; sons, Anais and Charles;
and seven grandchildren.
Memorial services were held on March 26 at the St. Denis Church in Havertown.
