Weiner
stands In Her Shoes
Kevin Maher ’04 Best-selling author Jennifer Weiner delivered a talk March 13 in the St. Augustine Center on her two renowned works, Good in Bed and In Her Shoes, as part of the Women’s Studies Lecture Series.
Introduced as “taking America by storm,” she described her
inspiration as coming from real life experiences, joking slyly that “the
secret to literary success is getting some jerk to break your heart.”
To the delight of the audience she read several passages from her two books, commenting as she went about how personal situations paralleled those somewhat more exaggerated scenes depicted in the book. Focusing on issues surrounding weight as being very prevalent in the genre of women’s fiction, one of the most amusing scenarios from Good in Bed describes the main characters experiences in a weight-loss center. Weiner also stressed the unpredictability of the industry by referencing the debut of In Her Shoes, whose cover coincidentally bares a striking resemblance to another recently released book titled Best Fetish Erotica, a work of a bit different nature. Dr. Heather Hicks, assistant professor of English described the classroom use of Weiner’s popular literature as fitting in with many themes of post-feminism. While there is no longer a collective feminist movement as there once was, she explains, we now see young, ambitious women expecting to have the same opportunities as men. Weiner addresses many of the issues at play. |
