Villanova
wins Collegiate Click Drive
Colleen O’Boyle ‘04
The Villanova community has proven its dedication and
commitment to service in the spirit of fighting hunger and poverty. Raising
over $5,800, Villanova University placed first among over 200 colleges
and universities nationwide to win the Oxfam America Collegiate Click
Drive.
Villanova topped Columbia University and Brandeis University at over $5,200
and $2,200 respectively. The drive prompted Internet surfers to visit
website www.povertyfighters.com and click a link on behalf of the University.
Each click generated a monetary donation of $.25 in the form of small
business loans to help needy families around the world. These micro-credit
loans enable families to reach economic stability in order to keep children
in school and to free laborers from depending upon sweatshops for employment.
Villanova’s Student Government Association was in charge of promoting
the project and agreed to donate the winning prize money of $1,000 to
Water for Waslala, a non-profit project founded in 2003 by Villanova senior
Matt Nespoli. Water for Wasala is dedicated to providing water systems
for the poverty-stricken area of Waslala, Nicaragua. The project is also
supported by the Augustinian Volunteers.
In total, the Click Drive raised over $32,000 to help families worldwide
with an additional $1,000 headed straight to help the Villanova initiative
in South America. Congratulations, Villanova
