Dr.
John DeFlaminis, executive director of the Center for Educational Excellence
at the University of Pennsylvania, presented the keynote speech at the
annual Masters of Public Administration dinner, held on Mar. 20 at the
Villanova Conference Center. DeFlaminis, the retired superintendent of
Radnor Public Schools, spoke on “Public Service and the School Superintendency:
Lessons on Leadership,” drawing on his own experience as a leader
in the public school system.
“He talked about the lifelong process of learning and developing
skills and habits in a way to allow you to grow in your job and career,”
Craig Wheeland, MPA director, said. “Dr. DeFlaminis gave valuable
insight into the lessons of a professional in public service.”
DeFlaminis structured his speech into 12 key points, supporting each point
with quotations and cartoons. He emphasized how public leaders must view
themselves as always in a state of becoming and the importance of realizing
that leadership is the job of everyone, not simply elected or appointed
public employees.
Approximately 40 MPA students, alums, faculty and their guests attended
the dinner.
