Sophomore Ben Donahower, political science major, is
running on the Democratic ticket for representative of the Pennsylvania
43rd House District in West Lampeter Township. He aims to defeat incumbent
Republican Scott Boyd, and if elected, will work to increase education
funding, according to an article published in the Intelligencer Journal.
The Chicago Tribune quoted economics professor Kishor Thanawala in an
article on the failing consumer confidence index. Thanawala, who studies
behavioral economics, commented on the difficulty of “belt-tightening”
in the current materialistic society.
The Villanova women’s crew team was pictured in the Orlando Sentinel
as they trained at Florida’s Kraft Azalea Gardens in Winter Park.
The women competed in a regatta at the park, against 40 other teams.
The Bridgeport Barrage of Major League Lacrosse are relocating from the
Ballpark at Harbor Yard in Bridgeport, Conn. to Villanova Stadium, on
the campus of Villanova University for the upcoming season. The team will
play six home games at Villanova, and will be known as the Philadelphia
Barrage, according to an article in the Philadelphia Business Journal.
Dr. Hafeez Malik, professor of political science, was quoted in an article
in the Cherry Hill Courier-Post about the martyring of the Prophet Muhammed’s
grandson, Hussain ibn Ali, in Iraq. Malik has been an editor of the Journal
of South Asian and Middle Eastern Studies for 27 years.
The West Chester Daily Local News published a brief article on Catherine
Kerrison, assistant professor of history, who led a March 13th discussion
at the Valley Forge AAUW (American Association of University Women). The
discussion, in honor of Women’s History Month, focused on how the
Civil War changed the meaning of being a female in the United States.
The Suburban & Wayne Times reported that Chestnut Hill Academy hosted
visiting Villanova English professors Vona Groarke and Conor O’Callaghan
at their annual Franklin A. and Margaret W. Steele Guest Faculty Forum
on March 15. The professors, poets who reside fulltime in Dundalk, Ireland,
gave a presentation entitled “Talking Irish, Writing English.”
Professor Michelle J. Anderson, who teaches criminal law and specializes
in rape law, was quoted in a New York Times article on the rape shield
law as it functions in Kobe Bryant’s sexual assault case.
Norm Pitt, associate director for Villanova’s psychological counseling
center, was featured in a Philadelphia Weekly article on the development
of Fishtown, a working-class Philadelphia enclave. Pitt, who has resided
in the neighborhood for decades, commented on its economic diversity.
The New London, Conn. Day reported that Rachel O’Toole, assistant
professor of history, will be speaking about “Africans, Indians,
and the Making of ‘Race” in Colonial Peru” on April
16 at Connecticut College. The speech is part of a month-long lecture
series spearheaded by Connecticut College’s Latin American Studies
program.
Shatema Threadcraft, a doctoral candidate in philosophy at Villanova,
wrote an article on gay marriage and the creation of the nuclear family
that was published in the Danville News. Threadcraft, who also directs
Villanova’s minority retention program, originally composed the
article for Progressive Media Project, a source of liberal commentary
on domestic and internantional issues.
J. Gary Dean, CPA, who is an adjunct professor in the Graduate Tax Program
at Villanova, wrote several articles that were published in the CPA Journal,
one on Pennsylvania’s tax codes and one on balancing property taxes.
Pennsylvania Library Association Bulletin published an article that Susan
Markley wrote on electronic theses and dissertations. Markley is head
of the University’s periodical department and serves as chair of
PaLA’s Electronic Resources Roundtable.
“Sanctuary,” an acoustic band from Villanova, provided music
at a “Building Bridges for Peace” event in Upper Darby, according
to the Primos, Pa. Daily Times. The March 13 event was part of a two-day
demonstration by the Brandywine Peace Community to commemorate the first
anniversary of the U.S. war in Iraq.
The Haverford Press cited Villanova University for its sponsorship of
the Robotics Team at Malvern Prep. The team, in its second year of operation,
is designing a robot to enter into competition at the national US FIRST
program.
Bill McDermott, a member of Villanova’s advisory board, was featured
in a Philadelphia Business Journal article detailing his work with Germany-based
software company SAP AG. Since McDermott was promoted to president and
chief executive officer of the American branch in November 2002, the company
has become the fastest-growing software company in America.
Peter Zaleski, chairman of the economics department at Villanova University,
was quoted in a Philadelphia Inquirer article on Disney’s Eisner
crisis.
Geri O’Hare, a Villanova alum, was pictured in Eastern Delaware
County Town Talk for her recent volunteer trip to work with the people
of Hospice Saint Joseph. O’Hare began her service in Haiti in 1988
as a member of one of Villanova’s Spring Break Service Trips, and
has since become a member of the Board of Directors for Hospice Saint
Joseph.
