Washington
Center Internship Program available to students
Eileen M. Rafferty ‘06
Each semester numerous internship options are available
for interested students. Among them is the Washington Center for Internships
and Academic Seminars, a program formatted for students to receive 15
academic credit hours while gaining valuable professional experience.
During this internship, students spend four days per week at a designated
site, as well as taking an academic course. The latter includes various
activities such as attending the Presidential Lecture Series and visiting
the embassies.
There are thousands of placement possibilities for interns, including
the U.S. Congress, the American Red Cross, the U.S. Department of Commerce,
CNN, Amnesty International, the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights and the
National Endowment for the Arts.
“One hundred percent of the students have really loved the program,”
said Dr. John O’Leary, director of the Internship Program and assistant
professor of communication. “This experience has really changed
lives.”
Political science major Diana Doukas ’05 agreed: “Being in
Washington is an incredible experience. You can’t learn what I have
learned here in a classroom.” She is currently interning for Senator
Charles Schumer (D-NY) and feels “privileged to be observing the
Senate from the inside.”
Students apply to specific areas of the program such as the Nonprofit
Leaders Program, the Mass Communications Program, the Congressional Leadership
Program or the general program, to name a few. Once accepted into a program,
a professional supervisor works with the interns to match the students’
placement interests.
Villanova tuition covers the cost of the program, including guaranteed
apartment housing. For students in the College of Arts and Sciences to
be eligible, they must have completed their second year and have a minimum
3.0 grade point average. To apply, students should start by contacting
the Internship Office at 9-4661. Deadlines vary according to program.
