C&F
launches new Center
On Nov. 14, the College of Commerce and Finance opened
its new Center for Responsible Leadership and Governance to the Villanova
community with a ceremony held in the Bartley Hall’s Atrium. Dr.
Jonathan Doh, assistant professor of management, who will serve as the
director, welcomed guests and briefly explained the Center’s goals
and mission.
The Rev. Edmund J. Dobbin, O.S.A., University president, commented on
the significance of the Center, which will focus on the University’s
long tradition of emphasizing a values-based education. In addition, Herb
Aspbury, a 1967 graduate of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences,
who will chair the Center’s Advisiory Council, and Dr. Stephen Stumpf,
dean of C&F, who holds the Fred J. Springer Endowed Chair in Business
Leadership, offered views on the importance and vision of this initiative.
Although the Center has not been officially open for business, it has
already been active in a number of areas, according to Dr. Doh. “The
Center has supported Villanova’s sophomore service learning community,
sponsored faculty development of creative teaching tools for infusing
our curriculum with ethics and social responsibility content, developed
a working paper series to honor faculty doing cutting-edge research on
topics related to the its mission such as socially responsible investing,
corporate governance, socially responsible marketing, anti-corruption
and other topics, and supported a variety of projects across C&F and
the University,” said Doh.
The Center’s goal is to establish a broad community of teachers,
scholars, students and professionals interested in working with its members
to promote its mission of values-based leadership, ethical decision-making,
and quality stakeholder relationships. The initial members of the Advisory
Council include a number of University faculty as well as prominent businessmen
and consultants.
Doh also acknowledged the individuals who have worked in various ways
to help establish the Center, including the faculty associates and students,
as well as thanking donors Fred and Peggy Springer for their support of
C&F’s initiatives.
