Campaigner
against sanctions in Iraq receives Peace Award

On,
Nov. 12, Kathy Kelly, co-founder of Voices in the Wilderness and a nominee
for the 2003 Nobel Peace Prize, received the Adela Dwyer-St. Thomas of
Villanova Peace Award from the Center for Peace and Justice Education.
Kelly also delivered a lecture on the work of her organization, which
was established in 1996 to campaign for the end of United Nations/United
States sanctions against Iraq. Since 1996, she has made 20 visits to Iraq.
In October of 2002, she joined other anti-war activists in Baghdad and
maintained a presence throughout the invasion, bombardment and occupation.
She left Iraq on April 19 of this year.
Kelly earned a bachelor’s degree from Loyola University in Chicago,
and holds a master’s degree in religious education from the Chicago
Theological Seminary. She has written, contributed and edited articles
for a number of publications, including America, The National Catholic
Reporter, and The Columbia Journal of International Relations. She has
received or been nominated for awards by more than 20 peace organizations.
