Economics professor Dr. Charles Zech was quoted in several
articles over the past month. The New York Times quoted Zech in an article
about Catholics who want their parishes respond to the recent crises confronting
the Church through an increase in financial accountability. The article
also ran in the York Dispatch.
Zech was also quoted in the Tribune Review and Daily Courier on the dwindling
number of Catholic clergy members. Zech is the author of two commentaries
on the priest shortage, respectively titled “The Catholic Church,
Resource Allocation and the Priest Shortage” and “An Empirical
Analysis of Options for Dealing with the U.S. Catholic Priest Shortage.”
In addition, the Sunday Tribune-Democrat and the Baltimore Sun quoted
Zech in articles on donations to Catholic Churches and seminaries.
Dr. Stephen J. Andriole was referred to in a Technology Times article
on the 2003 Enterprise Awards, which recognizes the region’s most
exceptional technology and life sciences companies. Andriole is one of
10 judges to determine the winner of the awards.
Dr. Anthony Godzieba was the guest speaker at a recent luncheon meeting
of the Sierra Club. Godzieba’s lecture was mentioned in the Catholic
Standard & Times.
The Academy Community published an article on a lecture Dr. James Kirschke
gave to a local high school. Kirschke lectured on the background of Stephen
Crane’s The Red Badge of Courage.
Kirschke was also featured as an Honored Author and Special Guest at the
Free Library of Philadelphia’s Borrows Ball for his novel Not Going
Home Alone.
Main Line Life published an article on the annual Barrymore Awards, citing
theatre professor Janus Stefanowicz’s win for the Costume Design
award. Stefanowicz designed costumes for the Wilma Theatre’s Big
Love.
An article in the Ridley Press stated that the University’s Office
of Research and Sponsored Projects was awarded $39,300 to be used for
the best management practice-infiltration trench. The money was awarded
by the Growing Greener program to improve the environment in Southeastern
Pennsylvania.
A New York Times obituary on James O’Gara, the editor of the Catholic
magazine Commonweal, quoted theology professor Dr. Rodger Van Allen. Van
Allen has written two books on Commonweal.
Columnist John Grogan of the Philadelphia Inquirer quoted mathematics
professor Dr. Robert Jantzen in a commentary on living within one’s
means. Jantzen discussed the difficulties of working full time when not
earning a living wage.
An article in the Catholic Star Herald noted that Dr. Mark Doorley, assistant
director of the Ethics program, would serve as a guest lecturer in a Cherry
Hill lecture series titled “Catch the Spirit.”
The Daily Times noted Dr. Mary Ann Schofield is conducting a mystery book
discussion group at Glenolden library.
Indian Country Today published an article about the University’s
Native American Festival, held on campus in November. The festival celebrated
Native American culture with tribal dress, music and food.
