Charity symposium held, dedicated to Mine Ener’s work
Eileen M. Rafferty ‘06

Is charity really an action of love? Or do one’s contributions just earn oneself a place in heaven? Are people really in dire need of charity or does the camera embellish its photographs? What role do multinational corporations play in regard to charity? These topics were deliberated on Jan.29 during, “Charity: An Interdisciplinary Symposium,” which was held in honor of the the late Dr. Mine Ener and her work, in the DeLeon room of the St. Augustine Center.

The symposium was divided into three panels: Sacred & Secular, Hot & Cold and Charity in Action. During the first panel, the ground-breaking research Ener conducted was addressed. During the following panels, the social structure and economics of charity, as well as the factors which influence people to give were elucidated.

Dr. Lucy McDiarmid, professor of English, and Dr. Lowell Gustafson, associate professor of political science, co-chaired the symposium. It was sponsored by the departments of English, history, political science, sociology, theology and religious studies, the Center for Peace and Justice Education, the College of Commerce and Finance and the Graduate School of Liberal Arts and Sciences.
