The
Villanova Theatre presents “Summer and Smoke”
Colleen O’Boyle ‘04
Kicking off the spring 2004 production season, the Villanova
Theatre will present “Summer and Smoke,” in Vasey Hall from
Feb. 10-22. Written by the great American playwright Tennessee Williams,
the play is set in the backdrop of Mississippi near the turn of the century.
It explores the interpersonal struggles between characters Alma, the reserved
daughter of a minister, and John, neighbor and object of her life-long
infatuation.
Joanna Rotte, professor and former chair of the Villanova theatre department,
spearheads the production as director. Elizabeth Pool and Stephen Fletcher
perform the lead roles of Alma and John. As a graduate of NYU's Tisch
School of the Arts, this is Elizabeth’s first performance at Villanova.
She is currently a first-year graduate assistant in properties construction.
Stephen is a guest actor whose recent credits include performances with
The Philadelphia Shakespeare Festival. He received a Bachelor of Fine
Arts from Carnegie Mellon University. The supporting actors are comprised
of graduate theatre students, undergraduates and guest actors.
The curtain will rise at 8 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday evenings and
at 2 p.m. Sunday afternoons. Students and faculty can purchase tickets
at the discount prices of $5 and $8 each, respectively, discounted from
the regular ticket prices ranging between $18 and $22. This discount is
limited to two tickets per person and the theatre recommends purchasing
tickets at least two days in advance of the performance date.
Both Tuesday productions offer two free tickets per student or faculty
member, compliments of the Villanova Theatre. Contact the box office at
97474 or visit www.villanova.theatre.villanova.edu for more information.
