Career Services hosts Career Conferences
Kevin Maher ’04 To assist students with their job and internships searches, the Spring 2003 Career Conferences were held between Feb. 3 and 5 in the Villanova Room of the Connelly Center. Co-sponsored by Career Services, the academic Colleges and the Student Government Association, the program featured the College of Commerce and Finance, the College of Engineering and the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. Nancy Dudak, director of Career Services, described the conferences as an opportunity for students to develop networking skills. Also, by creating a free flow, business-like environment, the program offered the experience of situations similar to those that students are likely to encounter in the workplace. Recruiters of all fields, from accounting firms to radio stations to non-profit organizations, came to meet with students, collect resumes, and discuss employment prospects. Some opted to attend more than one evening to increase their organization’s visibility and draw from a larger pool. In its third year, an additional presentation was added to each night to sharpen students’ techniques in approaching employers. Titled, “How to Work a Career Conference,” opening statements and appropriate conversation were among the topics discussed in the session. Future initiatives for Career Services include hosting James Malinchak, a motivational speaker with a high-powered message that “Empowers Audiences to Achieve Extra Ordinary Results,” on March 19, as well as working in conjunction with the academic Colleges on other projects. |
