Students promote social justice in nation’s capital
Colleen O’Boyle ‘04

Over 25 students traveled to Washington D.C. on January 30 to lobby a variety of social justice causes to congresspersons from their respective states. Led by Dr. Susan Toton, the students represented organizations in the Center for Peace and Justice Education, each asking for specific legal initiatives.

These groups and proposals include Bread for the World advocating the Millennium Challenge Account, United Students for Fair Trade opposing The Central American Free Trade Agreement (CAFTA), Villanovans for Peace supporting the Iraq Security and Stabilization Fund Act, and Villanovans for Life endorsing the Unborn Victims of Violence Act.

NETWORK, a national, Catholic social justice lobby, sponsored Villanova’s efforts by providing on-campus training on Martin Luther King Jr. Day. “I'd say the day was a great success,” commented Dr. Toton. “Senator Arlen Specter's (R-PA) aide, Chris Bradish, said it felt like an army of Villanova students had descended on Capitol Hill. He said it spoke well for Villanova that it was investing in developing students' advocacy skills.”
