Volunteer
programs made available to graduating seniors
Eileen M. Rafferty ‘06
Many second semester seniors are unsure of their postgraduate
plans. While some seek employment or apply to graduate school, a growing
number of students are considering volunteer programs. For this reason,
representatives from the Good Shepherd Volunteer Program (GSV) and the
Augustinian Volunteers gave presentations at the University at the end
of January.
Founded in 1992 by the sisters of the Good Shepherd, GSV focuses on four
ideals: spirituality, simplicity, social justice and community. The assignments
include domestic violence shelters, foster homes and daycare and alternative
school programs. Volunteers are placed in domestic sites for one year
or in international sites for two years. GSV Domestic and International
Coordinator Mary Helldorfer explained: “This program differs from
other programs because volunteers receive professional supervision and
professional development.”
“The Augustinian volunteers are Catholic men and women who wish
to serve God’s people in partnership with Augustinians and others,”
explained the Rev. Joseph Mostardi, O.S.A., coordinator of Villanova Volunteers.
The program lasts for 10 months, and volunteers are matched with a site
where their talents and skills will be utilized. Most sites are domestic,
yet the international options are becoming available. “Our program
stresses the lifestyle and teachings of St. Augustine,” Father Mostardi
told the students. “And these are great ideals to take with you
as you move on through life.”
Psychology major Louis Lalli ’04, impressed by both presentations,
said: “I’ve been blessed my whole life not to worry about
my financial situation. Now, here is a great opportunity to use the skills
I’ve learned to help others who haven’t been as fortunate.”
