A 400th
birthday celebration for Spain's legendary knight Beginning March 17 and continuing through March 19,
On the evening of March 17, Keynote Speech: Antonio Muñoz Molina, writer and director of the Instituto Cervantes, New York and member of the Royal Academy of Spain, will deliver the keynote address. For three days, the participants will discuss the topics such as “Don Quixote and the English-Speaking World,” “The Peninsular Legacy of Don Quixote.” and “Cervantes in America.” The conference will also examine how the work has been translated into film, and look at the legacy of Cervantes in the postmodern Hispanic world. “Don Quixote at 400 “ is sponsored by the Department of Classical and Modern Languages and Literatures, the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, the Office of Academic Affairs, the Office of Graduate Studies, Falvey Memorial Library, the Office of Multicultural Affairs, the Department of Theater, the Department of English, the Core Humanities, the Department of Humanities and Augustinian Traditions, and the Latin American Studies Program. Dr. Silvia Nagy-Zekmi, chair, Department of Classical and Modern Languages and Literatures, said: “I am very pleased that my Department is organizing such an important international conference at VU. In addition to 17 scholarly panels it will feature many events, among them a reception at the Falvey Memorial Library honoring the keynote speaker, award winning writer, Antonio Muñoz Molina. The library also has organized an exhibit of rare Cervantine works. A highlight of the conference will feature a staged reading of one of Cervantes' short plays.” Registration for all three days of the conference is $75.00. On Friday evening, March 18, there will be a special banquet at the Villanova Conference Center.
