Villanova hosts fashion show with a twist
By Kimberly A. Wallmeier '06

A movement encouraging a healthy body image is sweeping the country; campaigns stressing natural beauty and healthy lifestyle choices are being introduced by a bevy of major consumer products companies. On Monday, March 21 at Villanova’s Connelly Center, the Center for Health and Wellness Education will host a fashion show to promote and raise awareness of a healthy body image. The event will begin at 6 p.m. in the Villanova Room and will highlight how our diverse student body types use today’s fashions to express their personal styles, while taking full advantage of their various body types, sizes and ethnicities. Jennifer Flannelly, a graduate student in the Center for Health and Wellness Education, said that “The goal is to illustrate that the typical Villanova student is confident with his or her body and can use fashion to express his or her personality.”

Titled Love the Skin You’re In: “The faces and fashions of Villanova University,” the runway show will feature male and female student models sporting fashions from affordable to wishful and conservative to creative. Each model received a nomination by his or her advisors and peers in various student organizations including Multicultural Affairs, the Theatre department, Campus Activities Team, student government association, Greek Life and more.

The evening will begin with a “how to build a wardrobe” session presented by personal shopping experts from Nordstrom. The main fashion show will follow, relaying the powerful messages of good self-esteem and self-acceptance through a storyline composed by the Counseling Center Eating Disorder peer educators and the Center for Health and Wellness Education. Lord and Taylor will sponsor the fashions worn by the student models and other local vendors will design their hair and makeup. During the event, Villanova departments and student organizations will provide education and health information. Other area vendors will offer free gifts and merchandise for sale. Participating business include beauty advisors from Mary Kay, Skirt Boutique, Zazii, Buttons and Bows, The Free Shop, Ventresca, Ltd., Skin Deep and Salon l’etoile. Toner Sound of Philadelphia and the Villanova Step Team will provide entertainment and dining services will supply refreshments.

The Center for Health and Wellness Education campaigns for all areas of well-being, including addictions, relationships, self-care and healthy body image. The fashion show is free to all community members. For details about the show contact Jennifer Flannelly at 95963 or go to www.villanova.edu/healthandwellnessed/fashion/fashion.htm .
