Communication
Honor Society inducts new members
By Kevin Maher ’04 Lambda
Pi Eta, the Communication Honor Society, welcomed a new class of 49 honor
students at its 10th annual induction ceremony and luncheon at the Villanova
Conference Center on April 6. Family, friends, current members and communication
faculty were on hand to recognize those students that demonstrate communication
excellence in the classroom as well as in the community through service.Coined by students of the department of communication at the University of Arkansas in 1985, the name Lambda Pi Eta references the history of the communication field as it dates back to Aristole’s On Rhetoric. As explained by Dr. Emory Woodard, the group’s faculty advisor, and the organization’s officers in the ceremony following the luncheon, Lambda Pi Eta is an acronym symbolizing the three factors for effective communication. The Greek letter L (lambda) stands for Logos meaning logic which is necessary for deliberation and problem solving. P (pi) refers to Pathos meaning emotion and describes the need for a certain emotional appeal to accompany conclusions. Finally, H (eta) alludes to Ethos which incorporates character credibility and ethics. The society exists as a means to reward scholastic achievement, stimulate interest in the communication field, encourage professional development, provide an opportunity for the discussion and exchange of ideas, nurture the relationship between faculty and students, and to explore options for further graduate studies. As part of the candle light induction, Courtney Starbuck ’03 was presented with the group’s first annual Pathos award for distinguished student dedication and service to the organization and the community. Monica Malpass, current co-anchor of Action News Morning newscast and Action News at Noon on WPVI-TV Channel 6, was on hand to accept the Ethos award honoring character and communication excellence as well as to address the new inductees and their guests. Offering words of wisdom for those pursuing careers in communication, she focused on the role of the media in the current war with Iraq from the perspective of a news anchor. |
