On May 18, the University will recognize
four philosophy graduate students as well as one from the chemistry department
for receiving their doctorate degree.
The philosophy department will recognize students Jamey Findling of Floyds
Knobs, Texas; Sarah Donovan of Bath, Maine; Shannon Mussett of Denver,
Colorado; and Dana Belu of Los Angeles, California. While Belu will be
awarded her doctorate this May, Findling, Donovan and Mussett received
their degree this past December; however, they will be participating in
the May commencement ceremonies.
Findling’s dissertation was titled, “The Dialectic of Being:
Gadamer’s reading of Plato,” and was defended in October and
was directed by Professor Dennis Schmidt. Donovan’s dissertation,
“Judith Butler and Luce Irigarary: Feminist Resources for Overcoming
Oppressive Exclusions,” directed by Professor Walter Brogan, and
Mussett’s dissertation, “Binding Nature and Freedom: Hegelian
Themes of Liberation and Oppression in Simone de Beauvoir,” directed
by Professor Dennis Schmidt, were also defended in October. Finally, Belu’s
dissertation, “Thinking Again: Heidegger on Technology and the Place
of Freedom,” was defended in early May and directed by Professor
John Caputo.
Dr. James Scull of Bedford Hills, New York, was awarded his doctorate
in chemistry last September, however he will take part in May’s
official commencement ceremonies. His thesis title was “Applications
of Transient Capillary Isotachophoresis/Capillary Zone Electrophoresis
to Pharmaceutical Analysis.” His research was directed by Professor
Joe Foley.
