Homecoming celebrations draw 15,000

A close loss to Massachusetts did little to prevent more
than 15,000 students, faculty and alumni from enjoying this year’s
Homecoming festivities.
“I think the events went really well for the attendance that we
had,” Debra Patch, assistant director of public safety, said. “All
of the student and alumni events were starting and ending at the same
time, so more people were going over to the game.”
According to Gary Olsen, assistant vice president for Alumni Affairs,
the weekend marked a 16 percent increase in game attendance, which was
attributed in part to holding the Alumni Family Picnic from noon until
3:30 p.m. and starting the football game immediately afterwards. In the
past, the game was held at noon, followed by the picnic.
“As a senior, I had a great time at Homecoming,” Sandra Castelli,
’04, said. “I was impressed by how many alumni came back for
the game and how everyone just really enjoyed themselves.”
Many underclassmen who were ineligible to attend the Alumni Picnic participated
in a student party held in the Quad, which featured a live band, games
and plenty of food.
The Class of ’98 held its five-year reunion over the weekend as
well. According to Olsen, “300 alumni from the Class of ’98
attended…representing 20 percent of the entire class.”
