Rondeau reviews NROTC
Jenny Diorio ‘04
On Oct. 7, Villanova’s Naval ROTC held its Fall
Review and Swearing-In Ceremony. Faculty, friends and family gathered
on Mendel Field to welcome the 45 freshman candidates as full members
of the Villanova Battalion of Midshipmen after their successful completion
of the India Company Freshman Orientation Program.
Before Admiral Rondeau addressed the candidates, the Rev. Peter M. Donohue, O.S.A, chaplain for the NROTC program, performed the invocation. Father
Donohue prayed for the blessing of the NROTC as they strive to “create
a world that dwells in peace.” The invocation was followed by a
drill exhibition by the Whiskey Company and march and formation of the
companies accomplished by the band.
Villanova’s NROTC commanding officer, Colonel J. Bruce Hulick (U.S.M.C)
expressed his hope for the new class of midshipmen as they begin to build
a reputation that will last long after their graduation from Villanova.
Colonel Hulick had the honor of introducing Admiral Rondeau who currently
serves as Navy Commander, Naval Service Training Command Commander, Navy
Region Midwest at the naval station in Great Lakes, Ill. She also is a
permanent member of the Council of Foreign Relations. Admiral Rondeau
has served the Navy for 26 years.
“There is an awful lot of value to character. Who you are really
does matter.”
Admiral Rondeau spoke of terrorism as a constant threat of darkness. But
she looked at the young candidates who stood in front of her and called
them “the future light of the world.”
Admiral Rondeau also presented Orientation graduate, Britney Runge, the
Milton Betelle Award for showing initiative, determination and creativity
in mission accomplishment. Daniel Kenyon received the Liberty Bell Award
for demonstrating exemplary teamwork during Orientation. Admiral Rondeau
accepted a Villanova naval baseball hat as a token of the Battalion’s
gratitude. The Pass in Review concluded the ceremony.
