Villanova’s
College of Nursing educating Omani health care leaders

Villanova University College of Nursing announces its
latest international venture, The Post-Basic Certificate in Nursing Administration,
designed for The Specialized Nursing Institute of the Sultanate of Oman’s
Ministry of Health. This nursing management development program meets
the needs of nurse managers and chief nursing officers in the Omani health
care system—one that parallels the American system. The program
runs from October 2003 through July 2004.
The program courses address ethics, leadership, health care administration,
finance, and health care organizations and nursing care systems. To complement
the theory learned, each student will have a practicum in administration
with a preceptor at a clinical site other than his or her current work
place. All courses and practica will take place in Muscat, Sultanate of
Oman.
The Post-Basic Certificate in Nursing Administration has been created
through a collaborative agreement between the College of Nursing, represented
by Connelly Endowed Dean and Professor of Nursing Dr. M. Louise Fitzpatrick,
and the Omani Minister of Health Dr. Ali Moosa.
College of Nursing Associate Professor Patricia M. Haynor, D.N.Sc., R.N.,
N.H.A., planned the program in cooperation with an Omani task force. This
group identified needs and objectives for the program, from which Dr.
Haynor developed course content that she is teaching. She is a recognized
expert and frequent lecturer on issues concerning job satisfaction, leadership
styles and strategies, nurse manager development, and career development.
Working in conjunction with Dr. Haynor is William Warfel, Ph.D., R.N.,
CNAA who has an extensive background in administration and is the former
vice president of patient care services for the Albert Einstein Healthcare
Network in Philadelphia, Pa. Dr. Warfel is guiding the Omani students
in their practica.
Fitzpatrick describes the College’s partnership with the Sultanate
of Oman as “highly successful. This program extends our involvement
with the Ministry of Health in preparing nurses to assume leadership positions
in their country.” The College of Nursing has collaborated with
the Sultanate of Oman’s Ministry of Health for nearly 10 years.
Through this relationship, the basic and advanced education of Omani nurses
has expanded, with the ultimate goal of improving health care in the country.
There are now approximately 90 Omani nurses who are Villanova alumni.
