Pearce
recognized with Outstanding Faculty Research Award
Erica Nowak
Dr.
John A. Pearce II, who holds the University Endowed Chair in Strategic
Management and Entrepreneurship in the College of Commerce and Finance,
received the 2002 – 2003 Outstanding Faculty Research Award.
Followed by a luncheon, which included past recipients of the award, as
well as colleagues and members of the administration, Pearce expressed
his gratitude and thanks. “I am very appreciative of the support
from the University,” said Pearce.
As the 37th recipient of the award, Pearce joins an elite group of University
faculty. Grateful to be among such a select group of recipients, Pearce
commented, “Flattery does not come from the award, but to join the
most successful researchers at the University.”
As a distinguished member of the University faculty, Pearce has co-authored
26 books and published over 21 articles that have appeared in the most
prestigious journals in strategic management. “I am not creating
new knowledge. I’m, at best, a translator,” noted Pearce.
“I translate sophisticated terminology into what practitioners can
understand.”
Some of his research interests include joint ventures, dominant coalitions,
corporate goal achievement and small and medium enterprise. Pearce’s
interest in research stems from his passion for knowledge. “To advance
knowledge, in my opinion, is what we are all about,” stated Pearce.
“I didn’t do the research in pursuit of the award; I did it
in pursuit of the knowledge.”
Currently, Pearce is involved with researching 10 different articles,
all of which are cross-disciplinary. This process is one that Pearce greatly
enjoys. “That’s what is exciting to me – working with
someone of a different expertise to blend knowledge together.”
“It’s impressive when you realize that Jack Pearce was not
selected by a committee dominated by C&F,” noted Graduate dean
Dr. Gerald Long. “Coming from C&F really demonstrates that this
is a cross-college award.”
Duly noted by Commerce and Finance dean Dr. Steven Stumpf, “It’s
nice to have someone from C&F, particularly because we are not as
big [in size as the other colleges.]”
Established 25 years ago, this award is parallel to the Lindback Award
for teaching excellence. The nomination process starts one year before
the award is given and is based on the nominee’s accomplishments
at Villanova. In order to be eligible for this award, one must be a full
professor and have an exceptional reputation within his/her field. Recipients
of the award are recognized monetarily, as well as with a luncheon the
following fall.
