The role
of Catholic universities in the contemporary world On Oct 28, Latin American Studies and the Office for Mission Effectiveness hosted a symposium called “The Role of Catholic Universities in the Contemporary World.” A reception followed the discussion for questions and conversation. The Rev. Edmund J. Dobbin, O.S.A. welcomed all attendees to the Connelly Center Cinema and thanked Dr. Lowell S. Gustafson, professor of political science at Villanova University for helping to organize the event. Fr. Dobbin then introduced the keynote speaker, Dr. Salomon Lerner Febres of Pontifica Universidad Catolica del Peru. Dr. Lerner gave his presentation in Spanish with an English interpreter to translate for the audience. Dr. Lerner spoke about the passion of Catholicism and the importance of it’s presence in the world today. He said that universities need to concentrate on their primary purpose which is spreading knowledge. He connected knowledge and truth to the human spirit and faith. Dr. Lerner called for a transformation within the church, yet understands the challenge ahead. He spoke about the importance of the Christian community and the need for unity in order to forge peace. |
