Villanova
Notes La Salle University’s La Salle Magazine featured Villanova English professor Dr. James Kirschke in an article that depicted his courageous service in the Vietnam War, which earned him a Purple Heart medal. The East Orange, N.J. Catholic Advocate, Falls River, Mass. Anchor, Mount Joy, Pa. Penny Saver, Nashville Tennessee Register, Saginaw, Mich. Catholic Weekly and Youngstown, Oh. Catholic Exponent reported that Villanova University was rated Best University- Master’s in the northern region by U.S. News & World Report. The Primos, Pa. Daily Times reported in an article on big business in Delaware County that Villanova University is the county’s largest educational institution and fifth largest employer. Dr. Michelle Anderson, professor at Villanova Law School, was quoted as an expert in rape law in Philadelphia Inquirer and Mobile, Ala. Mobile Register articles on the Kobe Bryant case. The Primos Daily Times reported that District Attorney G. Michael Green has hired a junior accounting major from Villanova’s Commerce & Finance School as a forensic intern to help in his quest to protect senior citizens from crime. The University of Pennsylvania’s Daily Pennsylvanian reported that Villanova University is participating in a Greater Philadelphia Student Association initiative to make Philadelphia more in tune with students’ needs. Ardmore, Pa.’s Main Line Times and Philadelphia City Paper reported Villanova’s award-winning costume designer Janus Stefanowicz displayed some of her extensive creations in an exhibit held at Villanova’s Art Gallery, titled “Theatrical Threads: The Art of Costume Design.” Main Line Times and Wayne, Pa.’s Suburban & Wayne Times reported on Villanova’s Parents’ Weekend debate between former Democratic presidential nominee Howard Dean and former U.S. Education Secretary William Bennett. Delaware County Town Talk reported that the Reverend Ralph J. Chieffo, who earned a master’s of English degree from Villanova in 1974, presided over the Sixteenth Annual Red Mass, a Eucharistic prayer seeking counsel. Main Line Times discussed the Villanova University crest, which is an adaptation of the historic seal of the Order of St. Augustine, in an article on the heritage of area colleges. Philadelphia’s Olney Times reported that Villanova Theatre opens its 2004-2005 season with “Art,” a comedy that is directed by University theatre professor Dr. Harriet Power. Main Line Times and Suburban & Wayne Times reported on Villanova’s historical and current development, including the College of Nursing’s new doctorate program, in an article comparing Main Line colleges. The Philadelphia Inquirer reported that Villanova University’s theatre department received nine nominations for the 2004 Barrymore Awards, which recognize superior musicals and plays in the Philadelphia area, making Villanova one of the most- nominated local programs. Suburban & Wayne Times and Levittown, Pa. Bucks County Courier reported that retired Anglican Archbishop of Cape Town Desmond Tutu, winner of the 1984 Nobel Peace Prize, gave a lecture at Villanova University. Philadelphia Business Journal mentioned Villanova University’s School of Commerce & Finance in an article on local business programs. Villanova humanities professor Dr. Jeanne Hefernan presented a public talk at the University titled “Catholics in the Public Square,” according to the Philadelphia Inquirer. The Philadelphia Inquirer reported on Villanova’s College Republicans’ and College Democrats’ extensive campaign to increase voter registration among students, a group whose voter turnout rates have historically been low in Pennsylvania. Philadelphia Inquirer Neighbors, Ardmore’s News of Delaware County and Primos’s Daily Times reported that several Villanova staff members, including Fran Pardini and Barbara Romagnoli, rowed in the Philadelphia Dragon Boat Festival on the Schuylkill River to benefit Fox Chase Cancer Center. The Philadelphia Inquirer and Oxford, Pa. Chester County Press reported that Vanessa Kerry, daughter of Sen. John Kerry, spoke at Villanova, as well as other area universities, to discuss the importance of voting. The Inquirer article quoted Villanova junior Jinny Jeong, an undecided voter who shared her opinions on the talk. Paul Gabe, a political science major at Villanova and a Bush volunteer contributed his opinion on the presidential debates to a Philadelphia Inquirer article. Villanova humanities professor Dr. Tim Horner discussed his views on the presidential debates in his regular political commentary for the Philadelphia Inquirer. The Norristown Times Herald reported that Dr. Albert Chiaradonna, strategic management professor in Villanova’s executive MBA program, gave the keynote at the 10th annual Technology and Learning Conference at Montgomery County Community College. Trenton’s NJEA Reporter announced a seminar that Dr. Ray Heitzmann led with Mary Kingwill of Weehawkin entitled “Enhancing the Understanding of American History Through Political Cartoon Interpretation.” Philadelphia’s Fishtown Star, Juniata News, News Gleaner and Olney Times reported that Mr. George Walter, the Assistant Dean of Financial Aid and Admissions at Villanova was the guest speaker at the Fathers’ and Mothers’ Association of Northeast Catholic. The Primos, Pa. Daily Times quoted Villamova political science professor Dr. David Barrett in several articles analyzing the outcome of the presidential debates, and quoted University political science professor Dr. Matthew Kerbel in a separate article that attempted to gauge the winner of the first debate. Philadelphia Daily News reported that Comcast SportsNet, the Daily News and Y100 Radio held a Sports Casting Call at Villanova as part of Hoops Mania. The prize was an on-air appearance with Comcast SportsNet host Michael Barkann. Dr. Rick Eckstein, Villanova sociology professor, was quoted in a Suburban & Wayne Times article on a Radnor board meeting to discuss making education a priority. City Suburban News reported on the latest exhibit at the Villanova Art Gallery in the Connelly Center: a multimedia showcase featuring the pastels, oils, drawings and prints of acclaimed painter Martha Carroll. Nursing Education Perspectives reported that the 5th Annual Faculty Development Institute is co-sponsored by the National League for Nursing and Villanova University College of Nursing, and will be held at Villanova. Dr. James Kirschke, a Villanova English professor, spoke at the Haverford Township Free Library, to discuss his memoir, “Not Going Home Alone: A Marine’s Story,” according to Primos, Pa. Daily Times. Proceeds from the discussion benefited Haverford’s “Right to Read” program, which promotes adult literacy. Dr. Kirschke also presented at the 2004 Annual Conference of the Rocky Mountain Language Association in Boulder, Co., and was subsequently named as chair of the 2006 conference. Philadelphia Inquirer Neighbors and Kennett Square, Pa.’s Kennett Paper reported that the Theater Department at Villanova University began its season with the philosophical comedy Art, presented in Vasey Hall. Dr. Phil Stephens, a Villanova biology professor, published a case study on the physiology of the ice hockey injury in the Stony Brook, N.Y. Journal of College Science Teaching. New York, N.Y. Nursing Education Perspectives reported that an initial group of 12 students are working toward their doctoral degrees at Villanova University College of Nursing in a program designed to prepare nurses for academic careers in higher education. Nursing Education Perspectives quoted Stephen Fugale, of UNIT’s senior management team, on the importance of E-learning tools. New York, N.Y.’s Foodservice Director reported that Villanova’s Dining Services will now offer upscale fare daily in one of its resident dining halls, and will offer upscale fare with wait service once at the end of the semester, in a new program called “Dine out at Dougherty.” Fort Washington, Pa.’s Valley Item and Lansdale, Pa.’s Reporter quoted Stefan Perun, a student in Villanova’s Master of Public Administration Program, in an article on financing loans for college education. Philadelphia City Paper reported that Villanova University will now have its own College Prowler guidebook, to provide anecdotal advice for prospective students, due to hit bookstores in the upcoming weeks. |
