Cultural Film and Lecture Series: “Truly, Madly, Deeply”
By Graham Rumble ‘06

From Oct. 25 to Oct. 27, the Cultural Films and Lecture Series will present its next film, “Truly, Madly, Deeply.” The movie was directed by Anthony Minghella, and it was first introduced in the United Kingdom in 1991. A young woman is so undone by the untimely demise of her lover that he returns in spirit form to guide her through the grieving process. Billed as "the thinking person’s Ghost," this gentle comic love story avoids many of that Hollywood blockbuster’s romantic trappings and pyrotechnics. According to John O’Leary, “In many ways the film Truly, Madly, Deeply exemplifies the mission of The Cultural Film Series. The plot is very similar to the popular Hollywood film Ghost (indeed critics have said that Truly, Madly, Deeply is Ghost for grown-ups), but because Minghella's film dares to be inventive and character centered, it illustrates the ways that film makers who work outside the Hollywood system can expand the possibilities of the art form.”

On Monday, Oct. 27, Paul Swann, will introduce the film to the audience. There will be a discussion session following the viewing of the film. Paul Swann is a professor of media culture studies and director of the M.F.A. program in film and media arts at Temple University. His articles on documentary film and visual culture have appeared in Velvet Light TRAP, American Studies, Current Research in Film, and Critical Communications Review.
