Dr. James Keating Hosts Inaugural Delta Epsilon Sigma
Lecture
Edward Pachell ‘04
On Sept. 16, Dr. James Keating spoke on “Living
the Moral Life: Consequences for the Good Life.” The presentation
was hosted by the Delta Epsilon Sigma Honor Society, which begins its
first active year since 1970.
The Society was reinstated last year by the Office of Mission Effectiveness
to better convey the University’s Catholic origin and Augustinian
basis to the Villanova community.
The requirements for students wishing to enter the honor society include
being in the top 10 percent of their class, having completed 50 percent
of their entire course load, and being an active member of the Villanova
community, with activities in both University life and community service.
Dr. Keating’s speech took place in the Bartley Hall Amphitheatre
was filled to maximum capacity actually leaving some students nearly standing
in the hallway.
Keating, author of the book “Pure Heart: Clear Conscience,”
spoke about various topics which ranged from determining one’s own
faith beliefs which can be difficult living in 21st Century America to
seeking truth in our daily lives.
“We as a people are what we love.” Keating said. “You
become the things you surround yourself with; therefore it is important
to be cautious of the things you open your heart to for you will slowly
become them. We must make a conscious effort to evaluate the things we
love, and if they do not correspond with the teachings of the Bible, we
must change what we love.”
Dr. Keating is a deacon as well as an associate professor of moral theology
at Pontificial College Josephinu in Columbus, Ohio.
