Presidential Scholars welcom Class of 2008, celebrate new academic year

On Sept. 23, Public Safety hosted their annual Public Safety auction outside
of Farrell Hall. A public viewing of all the items up for bid took place on
Sept. 22 so faculty, students, and staff members could check out what was
being offered.
Every
fall, Public Safety gathers items that have been submitted to the lost and
found during the previous school year. Items were collected from move-in day
of last august through move-in day of this school year. Many of the items
were on high demand and received and overwhelming amount of bids such as
cell phones, calculators, and a bike. About 30 people turned out for the
event and even more students than in past years looking for a good buy.
James Conway, of Public Safety was the auctioneer. This year $1,500 was
raised making it a success in the eyes of the Public Safety Department. All
the proceeds that are made will be donated to a charity chosen by the
director of Public Safety, Jeffery Horton. This year’s charity has not been
selected
yet, however in the past the money has gone to sexual harassment
organizations, fire and police victims of Sept. 11, and VEMS. “The biding is
exciting and can get intense,” said auctioneer James Conway. Public Safety
is pleased to report that approximately 80 percent of items turned in to
lost and found are returned to the owner within a short period of time.
Auctioning items that do not get retrieved is a way for Public Safety to
clear out their basement as well as contribute to a charitable organization. |
