Villanova Nursing's Dr. Patricia K. Bradley receives Founder's Award from Living Beyond Breast Cancer
By Ann Barrow

Villanova University College of Nursing Assistant Professor Patricia K. Bradley, Ph.D., R.N., C.S. received the first-ever Founder’s Award from Living Beyond Breast Cancer (LBBC) at its 10th annual black tie gala on Sept. 18,  at the Hyatt Regency in Philadelphia, Pa. Bradley melds her 27 years as a psychiatric-mental health nurse and her longtime devotion to public awareness of breast cancer by developing training programs and materials that focus on the needs of the African American community.

LBBC’s Founder’s Award was created in recognition of Dr. Marisa Weiss, who established the organization. It honors a person who demonstrates commitment to improving the lives of women with breast cancer. Bradley embodies such spirit, having co-authored LBBC’s publication “Getting Connected: African Americans Living Beyond Breast Cancer.” In 2001, the book won the H. Winter Griffith Award for excellence in patient education materials from the American Academy of Family Physicians and the Society of Teachers of Family Medicine. Bradley uses the book as a teaching tool for health care professionals to instruct them in delivering culturally sensitive breast health information for African Americans.

Bradley is also a faculty member for the Oncology Nursing Society’s Nurse Educators in Historically Black Colleges and Minority Institutions and a researcher with Thomas Jefferson University’s department of behavioral epidemiology. In addition to her work with LBBC, Bradley is active with the Linda Creed Breast Cancer Foundation and is a national volunteer with the American Cancer Society. She is a member of the Xi and Alpha Nu chapters of Sigma Theta Tau International.
