NCURA to honor Dr. Milton Cole with Distinguished Service Award
By Megan Armstrong '06

On Nov. 1 the National Council of University Research Administrators (NCURA) will present Dr. Milton Cole of Villanova’s Research Office with its Distinguished Service Award at the council’s 46th Annual Meeting in Washington D.C. NCURA will recognize Cole and present him with a plaque in recognition of his contributions to NCURA over the past 17 years.

NCURA established the award in 2001 as a way to recognize members of the council who have made sustained and distinctive contributions to the organization. According to NCURA, Cole not only meets the criteria for this esteemed award, but his services to the council far surpass them. In his seventeen years as an NCURA member, he has served in almost every capacity. Some of his responsibilities have included program chair, workshop coordinator, workshop faculty, moderator, panelist, discussant, committee member, evaluator and national committee chair. Cole also has made over a dozen presentations at regional and national meetings and has served on the Board of Directors, the Publications Committee, the Professional Development Committee and Editorial Board.

In addition to these formal roles, Cole has helped NCURA in several intangible ways. Whether posing an insightful and articulate question to a keynote speaker at an Annual Meeting or sharing his professional experience with NCURA’s newest members, “…the extent and quality of Milton’s contributions to NCURA have helped to make the organization stronger,” noted NCURA past president, Dr. Steven Hansen of Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville.

In response to receiving this honor, Cole remarked, “Throughout the years I have found this organization invaluable in terms of the access it provided to representatives of funding agencies, and the opportunity to network with some of the greatest minds in the profession. That this august organization should choose to honor me for ‘distinguished service’ is gratifying and humbling.”

Established in 1959, NCURA serves its members and advances the field of research administration through professional development, the sharing of knowledge and by fostering community.
