Naval ROTC Unit holds Fall Review

The members of the Naval and Marine ROTC Unit of the Class of 2008 were formally inducted into the battalion of midshipmen in a ceremony held during the Fall Review on Oct. 5 on Mendel Field. The Rev. Peter Donohue, O.S.A., chaplain for the Unit and chair of the theatre department gave the invocation. Col. J. Bruce Hulick, USMC, professor of naval science and chair of the department, welcomed the new midshipmen and introduced the reviewing officer, Rear Admiral Kathleen L. Martin, Deputy Surgeon General of the Navy/Vice Chief, Bureau of Medicine and Surgery.

Adm. Martin addressed the midshipmen and presided at the swearing-in ceremony. “You should take pride in claiming you are member of the Navy and Marine Corps team,” said Adm. Martin. “Where you will serve is unpredictable, but…your future will not be like anything you could possibly imagine.” She asked the midshipmen to look around them at their classmates standing at attention. “You are looking at the your first shipmates, the beginning of your Navy and Marine Corps family, the friends with whom you will bond, and in some cases, those you will stay close to for the rest of your Navy lives,” she said. “I cherish my Navy and Marine Corps family. I depend upon them for support, courage and leadership, and I could not do my job without them.”

Afterward, Adm. Martin and Col. Hulick presented two awards: The Milton Betelle Award and the Liberty Bell Award were given to James Dudley and John Kearby, respectively, both midshipmen fourth class. The Barkley Morris Grant was awarded to Michael Merlini, midshipman third class, prior to the ceremony. Following the presentation, the battalion marched in the pass-in-review parade on Mendel Field.
