Villanova
University Theatre Department honored with nine Barrymore Award nominations By Sue Winge Theatre Department 2004 Barrymore Award nominations were announced in late September at Plays & Players Theatre in Philadelphia. The Villanova University Theatre Department received a total of nine Barrymore Award nominations for Excellence in Theatre from the Theatre Alliance of Greater Philadelphia. Villanova's April 2004 production of “Parade” received eight nominations, including Overall Production of a Musical, Ensemble in a Musical, Direction of a Musical, Music Direction, Leading Actor in a Musical, Leading Actress in a Musical, Costume Design and Choreography/Movement. Charlotte Cloe Fox Wind, a graduate of Villanova's M.A. Theatre program, also received a Barrymore nomination for Costume Design for Villanova's production of “Don Juan.” Theatre department chair Peter M. Donohue, O.S.A., received his fifth Barrymore nomination for Outstanding Direction of a Musical for “Parade”; he won the 2002 Barrymore Award for his direction of “Chicago.” Resident costume designer and costume shop manager Janus Stefanowicz received her 12th nomination for Outstanding Costume Design for “Parade”; she won her second Barrymore Award last year for The Wilma Theater’s production of “Big Love.” Barby Hobyak Roche, who teaches dance at Villanova, received a nomination for Outstanding Choregraphy/Movement and co-musical directors John Baxidine and Ken Brill earned a nomination for in a new category, Outstanding Music Direction. The 34-member cast of “Parade” was honored with a nomination for Outstanding Ensemble in a Musical. Two graduate theatre students received individual nominations for excellence in acting: Nina Donze received a Leading Actress nomination for her role as Lucille Frank and Josh Sauerman received a Leading Actor nomination for his portrayal of Leo Frank. Villanova faculty and staff were also recognized for their work at area theatres. Assistant theatre professor Michael Hollinger received a nomination for Outstanding New Play for his co-authorship of “Brief Interviews with Hideous Men” for 1812 Productions. Resident lighting designer Jerold R. Forsyth received his ninth nomination for Outstanding Lighting Design for The Wilma Theater’s production of “Wintertime.” The Barrymore Awards are the most visible program of the Theatre Alliance of Greater Philadelphia. This year, nominators reviewed over 103 productions by 33 professional theatres; 73 productions became eligible to receive awards. Winners will be announced at the 10th Annual Barrymore Awards ceremony on Monday, Nov. 15 at 7 p.m., at the Academy of Music in Philadelphia.
