Villanova
Notes Philadelphia’s Catholic Standard & Times published an article highlighting the $25 million campaign the Augustinians of the Province of Saint Thomas of Villanova are embarking on. Funds raised will go towards repairing the monastery on Villanova’s campus and benefiting the priests’ other volunteer programs. Portland, Maine’s CIN: Computers, Informatics, Nursing magazine discussed a Web site created by Dr. Thomas Way, a Villanova professor of computer science. The web site (www.dhmo.org) aims to informed concerned citizens about the dangers of dihydrogen monoxide. Wayne’s Technology Times reported that Anne M. Wilms, a member of Villanova’s CIO Advisory Council, was named to be a judge in the 2004 Enterprise Awards, which will recognize the achievements of leading technology companies and individuals. Dr. Charlene Mires, Villanova history professor, was quoted in articles in the Philadelphia Inquirer, Carlisle, Pa. Sentinel, Hanover Evening Sun and Montgomery County Observer detailing a proposed plan for a new security building in Independence Square. Philadelphia Daily News featured the Villanova football team’s opening season victory against Bucknell University in their College Football section, and reported that Villanova’s team was named the preseason favorite by coaches in the Atlantic 10 Division I-AA conference. Dr. Charles Zech, Villanova economics professor, was quoted as an expert in Catholic Church finances in articles published in the Chicago Tribune, Easton Express-Times, Lancaster Intelligencer Journal, Longview, Texas’s Longview News- Journal, detailing the Portland Archdiocese’s recent bankruptcy filing. Dr. Zech was also quoted in the Richmond, Ky. Richmond Register and Louisville Courier-Journal on the Louisville Archdiocese’s recent stabilization of financial woes. Sharika Anderson, a freshman engineering student, was mentioned in the Newark Star-Ledger for her receipt of a prestigious scholarship from the Simon Youth Foundation. The, Carlisle, Pa. Sentinel, Fort Washington Times Chronicle and Lancaster Intelligencer Journal reported that, in the recently- released U.S. News & World Report rankings, Villanova University again was ranked No. 1 Master’s University in the North. Emmaus, Pa.’s Bio Cycle, Philadelphia Business Journal and Philadelphia Daily News ran articles on Villanova’s civil and environmental engineering department’s latest project, a partnership with Organica Biotech to create and test “enhanced digestor” that will reduce odorous gases in Philadelphia. Villanova nursing professor Patricia Bradley, PhD, RN, CS received the first-ever Founder’s Award from the Living Beyond Breast Cancer (LBBC) Society, in honor of her ongoing commitment to improving women’s lives after breast cancer, according to Westtown, Pa.’s County Lines Magazine. Philadelphia attorney Marguerite Walsh, an adjunct professor at Villanova Law School, will assume a top role at San Francisco-based Littler Mendelson, the nation’s largest employment and labor law firm, according to the Suburban & Wayne Times. Villanova University received a grant from the Pennsylvania Council of the Arts, according to the Norristown Times Herald. Ardmore’s Main Line Times, Suburban & Wayne Times, Philadelphia Daily News and Philadelphia Inquirer reported on Villanova’s new post-graduate programs, including the Masters of Technology Management (MTM) program, launched in the fall 2004 semester as a cross-disciplinary program for engineers desiring to stay abreast of changing technologies. Dr. James Maule, professor at Villanova Law School, was quoted in the Wall Street Journal’s Tax Report. Dr. Robert Maranto, who is a scholar with The Commonwealth Foundation and teaches political science at Villanova, wrote an article praising charter schools that was published in the York Dispatch. Dr. Timothy Horner, Villanova core humanities professor writes political commentaries as a “Blue Stater” that are published in the Philadelphia Inquirer every week. Villanova University was named “Best College/ University” in the Suburban & Wayne Times’ 2004 Reader’s Choice poll. Drexel Hill, Pa.’s Marcus Hook Press and Claymont News reported on Villanova’s Applied Research in Computing Enterprise Services (ACRES) program, a research program that aims to increases the efficiency of military operations and improve intelligence gathering. Lebanon Daily News included a leadership conference sponsored by Villanova’s National Hispanic Institute in an article on initiatives that immigrant children are taking to increase their educational opportunities. Philadelphia Inquirer reported on the College of Nursing’s Role Excellence course, part of the Post-Master’s Certificate in Nursing Administration program. Dr. Elliot Sloane, professor of decision and information technologies, wrote an article on using a decision support system tool for healthcare technology assessments that was published in IEEE Engineering in Medicine & Biology. Dr. Michelle Anderson, a professor at Villanova Law School, was quoted as a rape law specialist in Allentown Morning Call, Baltimore Sun, Greensburg, Pa. Tribune- Review, Waterbury, Ct. Republican- American and York Daily Record articles discussing the implications of the Kobe Bryant case. She also expressed her dismay that Nike is negotiating with Lower Merion for the rights to Bryant’s high school jersey in Allentown Morning Call, Du Bois, Pa. Courier-Express, Easton, Pa. Express-Times and Latrobe, Pa. Latrobe Bulletin articles. Peter Fallon, former Heimbold Professor of Irish Studies at Villanova and published poet, gave a reading at Immaculata University, according to Wyndmoor, Pa.’s Irish Edition and Delaware Co. Town Talk. Dr. Beverly Kahn, Villanova professor of education and human services, led a panel on “Stress in Today’s Teenager” for Merion Mercy faculty, according to Ardmore’s Main Line Life. Villanova nursing Professor Elizabeth Dowdell, PhD, CRNP, RN published a study on the experience of grandmothers who are parenting their grandchildren in Huntington, N.Y.’s MCN. Philadelphia Inquirer reported that Villanova’s Executive M.B.A. program received excellent scores in a study that the Executive M.B.A. Council, the international association of M.B.A. programs, commissioned to gauge student satisfaction. An entrepreneurship article West Chester’s Daily Local News commended Helen Solomons of Human Resources Development for her recognition in the early 90s of the coming advent of the virtual workplace. Primos, Pa.’s Daily Times published a reader’s letter congratulating Villanova on the fact that out of 100 national finalists for Rhodes Scholar, five were from Villanova. |
