professor John Olson, receives 2002 Lindback Award

At
the end of the spring semester, after the May issue of Blueprints went
to press, Dr. John R. Johannes, vice president for Academic Affairs, announced
that Dr. John Olson, associate professor of biology, was named the 2003
recipient of the Lindback Distinguished Teaching Award, sponsored by the
Christian R. and Mary F. Lindback Foundation. Olsen was selected by the
University president from a list of finalists presented by the committee
on faculty.
According to Johannes, Olson, who joined the faculty in 1992, distinguished
himself by excellent and innovative teaching, while maintaining an active
scholarly research agenda. Recently, he was named director of the new
environmental studies concentration in the College of Liberal Arts and
Sciences.
The other four finalists were Dr. Evan Radcliffe, associate professor,
English; Dr. Noah P. Barsky, assistant professor, accountancy; Dr. Bernard
J. Gallagher, professor, sociology; and Dr. Eduard Casillas, assistant
professor, chemistry.
Several other faculty members received honorable mention: Edward Char,
instructor, electrical and computer engineering; Dr. Isabella Erickson,
assistant professor, nursing; Dr. Cynthia Glover, assistant professor,
sociology; Dr. Timothy Horner, Arthur J. Ennis post-doctoral fellow, core
humanities; Dr. Frank Mercedes, assistant professor, electrical and computer
engineering; Dr. Marycarol McGovern, assistant professor, nursing; James
Mullen, instructor, marketing; Dr. C. Naturaj, associate professor, mechanical
engineering; Dr. David Schindler, asst. professor, philosophy; and Dr.
Emory Woodard, assistant professor, communication.
Johannes expressed his thanks to faculty and students who nominated and
voted for the various candidates, and to the committee on faculty and
the Lindback Awards subcommittee for “a superb job in synthesizing
and winnowing the student and faculty balloting for the Lindback and in
identifying the ultimate winner.”
