By Greg McGlone ‘03
During
the week of June 6-13, eight faculty and staff members from Villanova
participated in Habitat for Humanity International’s Jimmy Carter
Work Project 2003, which took place in Anniston, Ala., LaGrange, Ga.,
and Valdosta, Ga. The group from Villanova headed to Valdosta. “Villanova
partly funded the trip for its faculty members, an opportunity a lot of
people don’t get, and we are very blessed and fortunate to have
that,” said Dorothy Lairdieson of the Center for Peace and Justice
Education. The service trip embodied Villanova’s mission statement
which states, “The University has always encouraged and supported
its faculty, students and staff in providing public service to the community.”
“When we arrived in Valdosta on June 6, there were 25 cement foundations
along with the tools and materials for construction. There were 1,100
participants, 38 of us were assigned to house # 4. When we left on Friday
afternoon, 25 houses were built and dedicated for the new homeowners who
took occupancy on July 1,” said Lairdieson.
The eight staff members who attended were Dorothy Lairdieson, Center for
Peace and Justice Education; Madeline DiPietro, English; Mary Quilter,
Ethics; Marita Podder, Telecommunications; Marie O’Brien, mathematical
sciences; Catherine McMahon, office of the Dean of Students; Ilene Lee,
Athletics; and Jeanne O’Neill, office of the Vice President for
Student Life. They were joined by student Erin O’Brien ’03
and her mother, Nancy O’Brien.
