Villanova
Center for Economic Education and the Philadelphia Stock Exchange hosted
the annual Stock Market Game Awards Banquet on June 4 in the Bartley Exchange.
Over 10,000 students from the five-county region participated in the game,
however only representatives for each winning team attended the banquet.
The game, played over a 10-week period, teaches students how the financial
markets work and the risks involved in decision making. Students “invest”
approximately $10,000 in NASDAQ, Amex and NYSE common stocks. They establish
a portfolio, research the rise and fall of specific stocks, and then make
decisions whether to buy, sell, or hold.
Certificate awards were presented to third place regional winner the A.M.
Kulp Elementary school, first place regional winner Fred S. Engle Middle
School, and second place regional winner Conestoga High School.
Participants noted the wealth of information they learned from playing
the game, however most students recognized another benefit to the Stock
Market Game. “The Stock Market Game taught us how to work as a team,”
explained a student from Harris Elementary.
Charlotte Higler, the field representative for the department of economics
education, was the master of ceremonies. Dr. John Coughlan and Dr. Peter
Zaleski, chairman for the department, addressed the students and teachers
at the banquet ceremonies.
The Stock Market Game of Pennsylvania is sponsored by Villanova and EconomicsPennsylvania.
On the worldwide level, the program is sponsored by the Securities Industry
Foundation for Economic Education.
