University: An educationally driven and welcoming community By Greg McGlone & Colleen Moughan Villanova University’s statement of community ideals addresses Villanova as a welcoming, educationally purposeful, selfless, just, caring and celebrative community. Villanova demonstrated their responsibility, specifically as a welcoming and educationally purposeful institution, with the recent articulation agreement with Montgomery County Community College (MCCC), which established an academic partnership between Villanova and MCCC. According to www.dictionary.com, a partnership is a “relationship between individuals or groups that is characterized by mutual cooperation and responsibility, as for the achievement of a specific goal.” Now a partner of MCCC, Villanova University will be working hand in hand with MCCC in assisting their adult students in transferring into Villanova’s new Bachelor of Interdisciplinary Studies Degree Program. Not only will this new program allow the MCCC adult student to reach their goal of obtaining a Villanova University degree, but it also demonstrates Villanova’s willingness to welcome members of other communities into their own, and sharing with them the determined and prominent education that Villanova is known for. The new agreement will allow adult students at MCCC, upon the completion of their associate degree, to transfer into Villanova's new Bachelor of Interdisciplinary Studies degree. The requirements for the MCCC students are that they finish their associate degree with a cumulative GPA of no lower than a 2.0, complete a "Dual Admission Intent" form, and satisfy all other Villanova transfer requirements for part-time study. Villanova has also agreed to accept the general education requirements in the MCCC associate in arts and associate in science degrees as meeting all the requirements of its undergraduate education requirements. The only exceptions are Theology 1050 (Christianity: Tradition and Transitions) and CHS 1000 (Core Humanities Seminar: Ancient, Medieval and Renaissance Thought), which must be completed by the transfer students upon their admission to Villanova. The new Bachelor of Interdisciplinary Studies Program, with concentrations in General Studies, Information Systems and Leadership Studies, was designed with an outlook towards the adult student's needs as well as major trends within today's society. All three concentrations will highlight the major elements of the Villanova core, including the humanities, ethics, philosophy, quantitative and scientific theory and social sciences. This core provides more choices as well as flexibility in order for adult students to select classes in line with their personal interests and experiences. The Office of Part-Time and Continuing Studies is pleased to be able to offer this new degree to MCCC adult students. For more than 85 years now, the Division of Part-time Studies has fulfilled the educational needs of men and women who were unable to or did not choose to pursue a regular full-time day program. Part-time Studies has continued to acknowledge that the non-traditional aged student requires different needs than that of the traditional-aged student, and with the creation of the new Bachelor of Interdisciplinary Studies Degree Program, a more flexible core curriculum will meet the needs of the non-traditional adult MCCC student. |
