ePortfolios coming soon Alexis Paolantonio '05 With everything from shopping to talking to people being done on the Internet today, it only makes sense that academic and career work be done online as well. In recent years electronic portfolios, or ePortfolios, have become the growing trend among universities and other institutions. A portfolio is simply an organized collection of completed work. Traditionally done on paper, more and more colleges, universities, professors, students and employers are turning to web-based portfolios. ePortfolios are thought by many to be the biggest technology advance on campuses to date. Villanova will begin an ePortfolio trial period this fall with a select group of students, and hopefully will expand to campus-wide ePortfilio use sometime in the future. In order to familiarize the academic community with the benefits of ePortfolios, as well as answer any questions the faculty might have, Villanova hosted ePortfolio Day in the Connelly Center on June 17. Villanova faculty, with faculty from 13 other institutions, including La Salle, Drexel and Arcadia, were among those able to talk to and hear presentations from several ePortfolio vendors. UNIT staff member and resource analyst of media services and special projects, Jennifer Pohlhaus, was one of the ePortfolio Day facilitators. Pohlhaus described ePortfolios as a “data storage” where students can keep all the work they’ve completed during their four years. The two main benefits Pohlhaus cited were that, “ePortfolios are a great way for the university to do accreditation assessments and it’s an excellent way for students to show work and ŕesumés to potential employers.”
