Habitat
for Humanity applauds Villanova participation Krystin Fischer '05 Since 1989, Villanova University has been an active participant and contributor to Habitat for Humanity. This year, Villanova was recognized for having the most participants in the Habitat for Humanity Collegiate Challenge. Not only did Villanova top the list of 246 academic institutions, but the University was ahead by at least 160 students. This accomplishment does not come as a surprise to Noreen Cameron, director of Campus Ministry, who stated, “I believe that we hunger for spirituality in what can be a fast and materialistic world. Students have time free from pressures of school and work and settle down to serve another.” Villanova encourages students to take advantage of the 45-50 Habitat for Humanity and mission break trips which are offered during fall and spring break as well as once during the winter and spring. Students and staff alike are invited to volunteer their time and energy each year to experience, first hand, the power and beauty of service. In addition to being a week of service to others, students often experience inner growth and realization on Habitat trips, something that cannot be replaced by vacationing at a “normal” spring break location. Villanova’s reputation for their involvement in Habitat for Humanity extends to incoming students. Many new students enter the University already aware that going on a service trip is one aspect of Villanova life that is not to be missed. It is a really refreshing occurrence to travel, build, work, cook and clean with 15 strangers who ultimately transform into friends by the end of just one week. Villanova’s enthusiastic participation in Habitat for Humanity is an inspiration and a true testament to the loving community the University fosters. |
