Make the Journey Together, Wildcat Pride Forever
Micheal Nataro '06

Just as in the past, mid-August saw the mass arrival of freshmen and transfer students on campus to begin a journey, a pilgrimage: their Villanova experience. Traditionally, the odyssey is kicked off with the most memorable days of the new students’ lives: Orientation. The University fulfills its mission strategically designed to by welcoming the freshmen and transfer students to the Villanova academic community.

This year 1,776 freshman and 94 transfers began their Villanova experience. About 100 orientation counselors in groups averaging 18-19 students filled the campus for five days. The program began with a Liturgy celebrated by the Rev. Edmund J. Dobbin, O.S.A., University president, in the Pavilion. Banners waived, hymns resounded and scores of orientation counselors followed by a column of Augustinians reverently proceeded down the center aisle to partake in the celebration of the Mass. Following the Mass, students shared five days of learning and community building.

Relationships were struck between upper classmen and new students as orientation counselors gave tours of campus, discussed and shared the college experience, eased fears, encouraged hopes and facilitated games such as “Mafia,” a popular ice-breaker game. Kristen Zodrow, a freshman from Hawaii noted that she “came out of orientation with 20 good friends.” She said,  “I can now enter the dining hall and see people I know, either from my group or people who are friends with kids in my group.” About orientation itself, Kristen was excited by the counselors’ enthusiasm, saying that “it was very welcoming and made (her) as a new student, really want to be here at Villanova.”

From the Orientation perspective, Director Kelly Eastland was also extremely pleased with the program this year. “This year's Orientation staff did a tremendous job in welcoming the new students into the Villanova community. Despite the rain of opening day, I think the new students and their parents felt the warmth and spirit of the Villanova community.”
