Public Safety officers receive commendation for assisting in delivery of a child
Sgt. Phil Esco - Department of Public Safety

On August 9, at approximately 0650 hours, PSO. Joseph Ahren and PSO. Leo Piccirelli were returning to Farrell Hall from the West Gate traveling south on Route 320. As they approached the intersection of Route 320 and Lancaster Avenue, they were approached by an unknown male. The male asked Ahern and Piccirelli to assist him because his wife was giving birth in the back seat of their car which was parked in the Villanova Dinner parking lot. Ahren radioed Headquarters to call paramedics. Ahren and Piccirelli immediately rendered assistance to the unknown woman in labor. Ahren observed the top of the baby's head and the fact that she was about to give birth at any moment. As Piccirelli maintained traffic and crowd control, Ahern, an EMT, got in the vehicle with the woman and coached her with breathing, insisting that she not push. Ahern also coached the father in assistiny, with the delivery of his child.

While awaiting the arrival of the paramedics, it became obvious that the baby was coming into the world when its head crowned. Paramedics then arrived and the couple delivered their second child, a boy. The woman, husband and child were then transported to Bryn Mawr Hospital Emergency Room for further evaluation and treatment. Family is doing fine.

PSO. Ahern and PSO. Piccirelli may never know the extent of their meritorious actions displayed on scene; however, your supervisor, manager, department and University as a whole are extremely proud of your efforts. You effectively displayed what Villanova University stands for as a community. Your positive efforts reflect not only upon yourselves, but the University as a whole. This event was something that can make everyone feel proud.
