Villanova Theatre announces 2004-2005 season

Award-winning theatre's 46th season features “Art,” “The Visit,” “Twelfth Night,” and “Big River.”

Villanova Theatre Department Chairperson Peter M. Donohue, O.S.A. announced today the four productions comprising Villanova Theatre's 2004-2005 season, its 46th year producing award-winning theatre for the Philadelphia region.

The upcoming season continues Villanova Theatre's rich tradition of presenting classical and contemporary plays directed by Villanova University faculty and featuring the acting talents of theatre graduate students. Villanova productions have been honored with 35 nominations and six Barrymore Awards for Excellence in Theatre from the Theatre Alliance of Greater Philadelphia.

The 2004-2005 season opens with the internationally-acclaimed hit comedy "Art,” written by Yasmina Reza and translated by Christopher Hampton. "Art" is a wise and witty play about three men whose friendship is put to the test when one purchases and absurd -and absurdly priced-piece of contemporary art. Filled with sharp dialogue and amusing observations about the fine art of friendship, "Art" will be staged by theatre professor Harriet Power Oct. 5-17.

Next, adjunct theatre professor Jonathan Carr will direct Friedrich Dtirrenmatt's 1956 tragicomedy "The Visit." In this dark fable, a scorned woman, Claire, returns to her poverty-stricken hometown to confront the man who turned his back on her many years ago. Now fabulously wealthy and intent on revenge, Claire offers to save the town from bankruptcy, but there's one small catch. This modern-day Greek tragedy shows just how far some people will go for love...and money. "The Visit" will be presented Nov. 9-21.

In February, theatre professor James J. Christy directs "Twelfth Night," one of William Shakespeare's most enduring and endearing romantic comedies. When the vivacious Viola is shipwrecked on the shores of Illyria, she disguises herself as a young man and is drafted by the love-sick Duke Orsino to woo the stubborn Olivia. Romantic havoc ensues with Olivia becomes smitten with Viola who, in turn, falls for the Duke, who is madly in love with Olivia! Full of ravishing language and rich characters, "Twelfth Night" with be presented Feb. 15-27, 2005.

The season ends with the seven-time Tony Award-winning musical "Big River,” based on Mark Twain's much-loved novel, "The Adventure of Huckleberry Finn." Featuring music and lyrics by country singer-songwriter Roger Miller and book by William Hauptmam, "Big River" follows the adventures of Huck Finn and the runaway slave Jim as the two board a raft and set sail down the mighty Mississippi searching for freedom and discovering the value of true friendship. Theatre department chairperson Peter M. Donohue, O.S.A. will stage "Big River" April 5-24, 2005.

All performances during the 2004-2005 season will be held in Vasey Hall. Show times are 8 p.m. Tuesday-Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday.
